Moving house is stressful. Moving your Serato library to a new laptop should not be. Done carefully, you can transfer crates, playlists, cue points and every track path so the new machine feels like the old one on day one.
What you need to move
A full Serato library transfer includes:
- Your music files
- Serato’s library database /
_Serato_folder data - Crates and playlists
- Cue points, loops and beatgrids (stored with the library / files)
Copying only the music folder is not enough. Copying only the _Serato_ folder without the audio files leaves you with missing tracks.
The safest way to move a Serato library
1. Consolidate music into one place first
If tracks are scattered across Downloads, desktops and old drives, gather them into a single main folder and update Serato paths before the move. MLT Switch is built for this: it moves files into one folder and rewrites library paths so nothing breaks.
2. Back up before you touch anything
Create a Serato library backup that includes music, crates and library data. If anything goes wrong on the new computer, you can restore.
3. Copy music + Serato library data to the new machine
Transfer the consolidated music folder and the Serato library data to the new computer (external SSD is usually fastest). Keep the folder structure consistent where you can.
4. Point Serato at the new locations
Open Serato on the new computer and confirm tracks play. If paths changed (different username, drive letter or volume name), relink missing files with Missing Tracks rather than re-importing from scratch.
5. Smoke-test a real gig crate
Play a crate you rely on. Check a few cue points and a USB export if you use one. Fix any orange tracks before the first booking on the new laptop.
Common transfer mistakes
- Moving music but leaving the old
_Serato_database behind - Changing folder names mid-copy
- Running Serato from a half-copied drive
- Skipping a backup “because it should be fine”
